The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Warren Wilson Armstrong (NSN: 0-75396), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. BRADFORD (DD-545), during operations against the enemy in the Okinawa campaign. From 14 May to 16 June 1945, the BRADFORD performed the vital and hazardous duty of Fighter Director Ship on a Radar Picket Station for a total of twenty days. Under constant threat of enemy attack and subjected to almost continuous alerts and numerous actual attacks, his heroic leadership maintained his crew at the peak of efficiency. Five enemy planes were destroyed by his ship’s gunfire, while nine were shot down by the Combat Air Patrol controlled by his ship. His courage and professional skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
