The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Arlie C. Armstrong, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman with an Infantry Battalion of the FIFTH Marine Division on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 26 March 1945. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Armstrong on 20 March went forward of our front lines and treated a seriously wounded Marine under severe automatic weapons fire. While he was so engaged, another litter bearer coming forward to his assistance was seriously wounded. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Armstrong treated the wounded Marine, evacuated him to a place of safety, and then although fully aware of his own peril and constantly exposed to enemy fire, returned to treat and evacuate the wounded litter bearer. His resolute courage and inspiring devotion to duty at all times were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
