The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Stephen Henry Ambruster (NSN: 0-62003), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy. During the period 24 July 1942 to 14 April 1943, while Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. TAMBOR (SS-198), he daringly and adeptly maneuvered his ship into positions from which to strike the enemy, and aggressively attacked, sinking three enemy ships totaling 22,000 tons, and damaging three additional ships totaling 17,500 tons. Further, in spite of persistent and vigorous enemy countermeasures, he handled his ship expertly to avoid major damage from enemy action. Commander Ambruster’s actions were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
