    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class William Francis Almond (NSN: 8848348), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 5 May 1945. Pharmacist’s Mate Almond, after working tirelessly over wounded Marines during an attack by his company, answered the call of one who was wounded and lying exposed to two enemy machine guns. Despite the heavy enemy fire, Pharmacist’s Mate Almond succeeded in treating the wounded man and bringing him back to a position of relative safety. In accomplishing this, Pharmacist’s Mate Almond was wounded by enemy machine gun fire. His personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
