The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Lloyd H. Almond (NSN: 8217881), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 July 1944. On the night of 21 July, while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to a Marine Rifle Company, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Almond, during a fierce Japanese counterattack, treated numerous wounded men in spite of the heavy enemy fire and in complete disregard for his own safety. Later, when seriously wounded, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Almond refused to be evacuated, but continued to treat wounded men under intense machine gun fire until dawn the following morning, when the platoon leader ordered him to be evacuated. His initiative, skill, and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
