The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant (MC) Jackson L. Allgood, Jr. (NSN: 0-196639), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Medical Officer on board the Destroyer U.S.S. BRYANT (DD-665), in action against the enemy off Okinawa on 16 April 1945. Lieutenant Allgood’s ship was subjected to a coordinated attack by six Japanese planes and hit by one of them, resulting in serious damage and a large number of personnel casualties. Although badly wounded himself, he proceeded to effectively treat the wounded so that some lives were saved and others speeded in recovery. His disregard for personal safety and his devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
