The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Robert Clinton Alexander (NSN: 8921922), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 23 March 1945. As a Hospital Corpsman attached to a Marine Rifle Company of the FIFTH Marine Division, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Alexander, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved into and beyond the front lines whenever wounded Marines needed treatment. Twice he administered plasma under heavy fire and numerous times he went into areas observed and covered by the enemy to render quick and effective first aid. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Alexander’s courage and conduct throughout the campaign were an inspiration to his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
