The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Louis Edward Schmidt, Jr. (NSN: 0-75092), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. ISHERWOOD (DD-520) in action against Japanese forces during the amphibious assault on Okinawa on 22 April 1945. Courageously directing his burning ship after it was severely damaged as a result of an enemy air attack, Commander Schmidt continued to maintain accurate fire from his remaining operable guns at hostile aircraft. Although his vessel suffered further damage from a depth charge explosion, he persisted in his gallant efforts and, by his initiative and determination, contributed materially to the saving of his ship from destruction. His inspiring leadership, professional skill and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Commander Schmidt and the United States Naval Service.
