The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Brown Taylor (NSN: 0-73399), United States Navy, for heroic and meritorious conduct while serving as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. CONYNGHAM (DD-371) during operations against the Japanese Fleet in the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, 19 – 20 June 1944. His destroyer was operating as part of the screen for the task group of fast battleships. The courageous and skillful manner in which he handled his destroyer in breaking up formations of enemy torpedo planes headed for the major ships of the Task Group while subjected to vicious and well executed dive bombing attacks was outstanding. His great courage, skill and efficiency materially contributed to the successful completion of the mission. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
