    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Commander Robert Waring McNitt, United States Navy, for heroism in the performance of his duties as Officer in Charge of a rescue party while serving aboard the U.S.S. BARB (SS-220) during a War Patrol in World War II in the Pacific. Through his inspiring leadership, able supervision and courage, he skillfully and efficiently assisted by swimming through rough water to exhausted survivors in hauling several of them on board his ship before heavy seas and an approaching storm prevented further rescues. His conduct and outstanding leadership ere such as to inspire his volunteer assistants and enthusiasm and spirit of self-sacrifice which were highly commendable. His courageous actions were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Robert Waring McNitt, United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. BARB (SS-220) during the NINTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters from 4 August to 25 September 1944. His excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems assisted his Commanding Officer appreciably in attacks against enemy shipping which sank approximately 40,000 tons, and damaged additional shipping. His skill and sound judgment contributed materially to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Robert Waring McNitt, United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. BARB (SS-220) during the EIGHTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 21 May 1944 to 9 July 1944. His ability to furnish his Commanding Officer with a continued flow of valuable information contributed directly to his vessel’s success in sinking five enemy ships by torpedoes and two enemy ships by gunfire for a total of 37,500 tons. His efficiency and coolness under trying conditions of severe enemy counter-measures greatly assisted his ship in conducting successful evasive tactics. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
