The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Stephen Lobdell Johnson (NSN: 0-82439), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. SHAD (SS-235), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-infested Pacific waters, from 28 September to 24 November 1943. By his efficient operation of the Torpedo Data Computer, Lieutenant Commander Johnson rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting aggressive torpedo attacks to sink two hostile transports totaling over 13,000 tons and damage four additional vessels despite severe hostile countermeasures. By his courage and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Johnson upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Stephen Lobdell Johnson (NSN: 0-82439), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. TUNNY (SS-282), during the EIGHTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the Nansei Shoto Area, from 3 February to 14 April 1945. Expertly handling attack problems throughout the hazardous mission, Lieutenant Commander Johnson rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in completing an important special mission and contributed materially to the success of his vessel in delivering a gun attack to sink a hostile lugger and in carrying out lifeguard duties to rescue three aviators. His skill and devotion to duty in the face of severe enemy countermeasures were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
