The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Clary Leonard John (NSN: 0-85195), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Diving Officer in the U.S.S. SEAWOLF (SS-197), during the TWELFTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 12 December 1943 to 27 January 1944. His precise and careful depth control contributed directly to his vessel’s success in sinking four enemy ships totaling 14,000 tons. His cool efficiency during enemy counter-measures greatly assisted his ship in conducting successful evasive tactics. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
