The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Philip Frederick Hauck (NSN: 0-75044), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. DUNCAN (DD-485), during action against enemy Japanese forces off Savo Island on the night of 11 October 1942. Ably controlling fire of the main battery of his ship, Lieutenant Hauck, with cool courage and superb skill, secured nine hits out of ten salvos fired at a hostile cruiser. His alert leadership and proficient technical ability were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
