The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Albert Schorr Fuhrman (NSN: 0-78861), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer, Navigator and Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. GUITARRO (SS-363), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the SECOND War Patrol of that Submarine in the South China Sea from 21 July to 8 September 1944. Through his excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems, together with his skillful navigation of the ship, Commander Fuhrman materially assisted his Commanding Officer in conducting torpedo attacks which resulted in the sinking of a total of 11,800 tons of hostile shipping, including two destroyers, and the damaging of an additional 10,000 tons, including a light cruiser. His outstanding skill and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
