The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Commander Allen Russell Faust (NSN: 0-77025), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. TREPANG (SS-412), during the FIFTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters near the Japanese Homeland from 15 June to 31 July 1945. Alert and untiring in the performance of his duties, Commander Faust saved the lives of ten Allied aviators shot down in hostile waters in three separate rescues and launched two torpedo and two gun attacks which resulted in sinking 4,000 tons of shipping despite severe enemy countermeasures. His leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
