The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Leonard Erb (NSN: 0-123763), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. RAY (SS-271), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters, from 23 September to 8 December 1944. Expertly handling attack problems, Lieutenant Commander Erb rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks to sink over 35,000 tons of enemy shipping and to inflict damage on 15,000 tons, despite severe enemy countermeasures. His skill and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
