The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Charles F. Irving (ASN: 0-1823451), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 702d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 2d Armored Division, on 29 September 1944 and 30 September 1944 at Nieuwstad, Holland. On 29 September 1944 and 30 September 1944, the tank destroyer platoon commanded by First Lieutenant Irving participated in an attack at Nieuwstad, Holland. As no enemy tanks appeared in that sector, the platoon was utilized to destroy enemy machine gun nests, infantry emplacements and one self-propelled gun. First Lieutenant Irving and two enlisted men dismounted and went forward, armed only with a light machine gun and carbines. The three attacked and destroyed the enemy position, killing twenty-two of the enemy and capturing fifteen prisoners. First Lieutenant Irving and two enlisted men attacked the enemy under extremely hazardous conditions and without regard of personal danger involved.
