The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) James R. Spurrier (ASN: 0-25273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop B, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in action at Leyte Province, Philippine Islands, on 30 November 1944. At 1540 hours, Captain Spurrier was given the mission of moving his troop around and attacking a strongly entrenched hostile perimeter which had severed the only supply route to his squadron. To perform this hazardous task, he was forced to cut his own trail through densely wooded jungle growth and over rugged mountain terrain. There was little chance of access, since the terrain and conditions controlling movement enhanced the strong probability of becoming lost. Captain Spurrier displayed initiative and courage by skillfully maneuvering during darkness and aggressively pushing his men to a point from which an attack could be made. During the early hours of the next day Captain Spurrier assumed command of all units in his sector, organizing men returning from the hospital and those carrying rations into a fighting platoon, and at 0700 launched a coordinated attack against the strong enemy position. Though constantly under fire, he gallantly led the attack and after twelve hours of hand-to-hand combat an estimated battalion of the enemy had been completely annihilated and our supply route reopened. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
