Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 36 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) Rowland Herman Renwanz (ASN: 0-23123), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as Squadron Commander of the 1st Squadron, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Philippine Islands, on 24 October 1944. During the initial drive to cross the Leyte Valley, the last phase of the advance was made across open rice paddies that afforded no cover and little concealment to the advancing squadron. The attacking troops came under heavy crossfire from rifles and automatic weapons. When the intensity of the fire halted the progress of the troops, Lieutenant Colonel Renwanz courageously advanced and made a personal reconnaissance through incessant enemy fire. He detected a flaw in the defenses and swiftly formulated a new plan of attack. After issuing the order to attack, he remained in his forward position and personally led the attack to the successful annihilation of the enemy. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Lieutenant Colonel Renwanz reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
