(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) Leonard L. Johnson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division at Leyte, Philippine Islands, during World War II. Captain Johnson led an attack and, under heavy enemy machine gun fire, ordered fixed bayonets and then led a charge on enemy positions. Although wounded by an enemy hand grenade, he continued to press on until the enemy was neutralized. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
