The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Carl B. Marshall, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 19 February 1970 while serving as a platoon leader with the Aero Rifle Platoon, Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while flying a visual reconnaissance mission, Captain Marshall was notified of a suspected enemy sighting. Although, he was critically low on fuel, Captain Marshall flew his light observation helicopter to the scene. With dusk quickly approaching and a dense fog covering the area he spotted the enemy along a jungle path. Captain Marshall began firing his weapons and destroyed the enemy. From the tree line came an intense barrage of enemy anti-aircraft fire directed toward his helicopter. He maneuvered through the hail of fire and directed his attack upon the bunkers inflicting many casualties. Captain Marshall’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
