The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Carl B. Marshall, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 21 January 1970 while serving as a platoon leader with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Captain Marshall led his fire team to support elements of a squadron that had encountered a battalion of North Vietnamese soldiers. Once at the scene of contact, he coordinated with ground forces and air support. Despite the incoming artillery and intense enemy fire, Captain Marshall directed his fire team to assist a reconnaissance troop by accurately placing suppressive fire upon the position. Despite a critical fuel shortage, he remained over the area to direct the fire team into the battle area. With half of his ordinance expended, two helicopters were brought under intense antiaircraft fire, damaging one of the ships. Immediately Captain Marshall notified his fire team of the intended target and made the initial assault on the position, marking targets for his wingman. After the position had been eliminated by his wingman, Captain Marshall returned to the Quan Loi Basecamp. Although Captain Marshall’s helicopter had lost use of the tail rotor, he brought the crippled aircraft to a safe landing. Captain Marshall’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
