The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Carl B. Marshall, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 7 July 1969 while serving as a helicopter commander with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while his gunship was providing cover for a light observation helicopter, the unarmed aircraft was shot down by intense enemy fire. Unhesitatingly, Lieutenant Marshall descended over the hostile positions in order to allow his gunner to bring them under rocket fire. Although his helicopter was subject to intense enemy automatic weapons fire, Lieutenant Marshall continued to fly at treetop level in order to provide suppressive fire while two other aircraft rescued the crew of the down helicopter. His heroic actions resulted in the silencing of the hostile positions and allowed the endangered soldiers to be extracted safely. First Lieutenant Marshall’s outstanding courage and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
