Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 18 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Donald E. Dickens (ASN: 38002255), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations on 16 March 1944. Private Dickens rushed from his station behind the lines to volunteer as a litter bearer for wounded who were exposed to enemy fire on open terrain. Without regard to the extreme peril of his exposure, he crossed an open, fire-swept area to attend to a wounded man, suffering mortal wounds himself before accomplishing his mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
