(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Benton William Cogswell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop E, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in action at Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 22 December 1944. During an engagement, Technical Sergeant Cogswell seized a light machine gun and, firing from the hip, advanced on a well-camouflaged Japanese entrenchment. His bold action neutralized the enemy position, allowing his platoon to advance and eliminate the threat. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Cogswell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
