The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Haskell O. Antonio (ASN: 38002355), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop B, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations on 17 March 1944. Private First Class Antonio ran to the aid of four comrades who had been hit by enemy fire while advancing at Lorengau, Manus Island. He brave intense raking by machine guns until he was mortally wounded. Although unsuccessful in his mission, his gallant attempt, and his willingness to sacrifice his life to aid his comrades is in keeping with the highest traditions of heroism. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
