The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James R. Moore (ASN: 16161229), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 386th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy. On 10 April 1945, at Hulscheid, Germany, Corporal Moore’s platoon came under heavy artillery barrage consisting of 88-mm. and 20-mm. gun fire from a range of 700 yards. Corporal Moore upon seeing a man from his platoon become a casualty in an exposed position, unhesitatingly left cover to proceed 75 yards across open terrain to evacuate the man to safety. After returning to his position, Corporal Moore saw another man fall wounded. He raced across 100 yards of rough ground to aid this casualty, but finding him dead, he again returned to his position. Corporal Moore then observed that his platoon sergeant and a wounded squad leader were having difficulty returning to cover after a reconnaissance of the enemy positions. He again went forward and assisted them to cover. Corporal Moore then proceeded to move up and down his squad line encouraging his men to hold on during the barrage. His great display of daring and gallantry in action under fire reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
