The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Richard J. Shingleton, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 303d Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in action at Siegburg, Germany, on the afternoon of 10 April 1945. While his platoon was advancing against two machine gun nests barricaded in the town, the platoon leader was seriously wounded, crossing a street. With no thought of his own safety and in the face of fire from the two hostile guns Technical Sergeant Shingleton entered the street and moved his platoon leader to a position where medical aid could be rendered. He then took command of the platoon, vigorously pushed the attack, and overran the enemy gun locations. The gallantry and leadership displayed by Technical Sergeant Shingleton on this occasion reflect high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
