The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Steven George Lazar (ASN: 13894320), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Lazar distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 23 February 1968, while serving as Platoon Leader with Company C, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under heavy fire, Lieutenant Lazar exposed himself to the hostile fire as he assaulted and destroyed an enemy bunker with hand grenades. Disregarding his own safety, he quickly moved his platoon into position and began sweeping the area. Again he braved heavy enemy fire and destroyed an enemy bunker with hand grenades. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Lieutenant Lazar’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
