The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade William E. Durham (ASN: 34717554), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 1st Armored Division, on 18 September 1944, in the vicinity of Castle Vecchio, Italy. Technician Fifth Grade Durham, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy shelling for the safety of his men, led a litter team of twelve men over rough terrain and under perilous conditions to the town of Castle Vecchio to evacuate the wounded. When his guide was killed, Technician Fifth Grade Durham continued on himself, going ahead alone when the situation was uncertain. He found more wounded than he had anticipated and, through quick thinking, took the greatest number possible in the most expedient manner and conveyed them back to the aid station. He then made a reconnaissance that provided a safe route for further evacuation. The courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty, as well as the total disregard for personal safety, displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Durham reflects the finest traditions of the service and merits the highest praise.
