Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 99 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert E. Jones (ASN: 34088188), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division on 1 September 1944, near Pontedera, Italy. Sergeant Jones, accompanied by another soldier, in full view and in direct line of fire from enemy snipers, moved through an unswept minefield to cover the evacuation of three wounded comrades. After having successfully accomplished his mission and upon returning to safety, Sergeant Jones stepped on a Schu-Mine. He received numerous severe wounds which later caused his death. The courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Jones reflect great credit upon the armed forces and are deserving of the highest praise.
