The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Harry A. Strawhacker (ASN: 36764773), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in Belgium, on 17 December 1944. On that date, in a defensive position at *****, Belgium, Company A, holding a gap between two platoons of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, was subjected to a strong enemy counterattack. When the enemy in a ferocious assault overran a portion of Company B, Private Strawhacker, a light machine gunner, was cut off and the left flank of Company A was threatened. When attempts to supply this enlisted man with ammunition failed, this gunner stayed in position and fired his weapon until all ammunition was spent. This action materially aided in breaking up the assault. Private Strawhacker then took his gun fifty yards through an area swept by devastating machine gun and rifle fire to a house where he again set up the weapon. Requiring more ammunition, this enlisted man fired into a large number of infiltrating troops. As a result of this action the company held its position until ordered to withdraw later that night. Private Strawhacker is now officially reported as missing in action. The gallantry, unswerving devotion to duty and disregard for personal safety far above and beyond the call of duty displayed by this enlisted man exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Army.
