The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Claude Keyes Hudson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 3 June 1969 while serving as the Commanding Officer of Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a combined friendly force was conducting a reconnaissance mission ten kilometers from An Loc when the lead elements suddenly were engaged by a North Vietnamese Army force using automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades. Reacting immediately Captain Hudson formed his troop on line and led a vicious assault on the enemy emplacements. After successfully overrunning several positions, the tank’s communications were partially destroyed. Captain Hudson, with complete disregard for his own safety leaped from his vehicle and sprinted through the withering hail of hostile fire to the tank. Using hand and arm signals he continued to direct the attack organizing and deploying his forces. He continually remained in an exposed position while leading his men up the hill. The two hour fight resulted in twenty-four enemy killed in action and the recovery of a large quantity of material. Captain Hudson’s gallant and courageous leadership was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
