The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Gilbert A. Elmy, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, on 26 February 1982. On that date, while participating in a Foreign Object Damage walk, Sergeant Elmy noticed that aircraft 55-099 was moving out of its revetment. Realizing that something was wrong, he quickly went to the aircraft which had come to rest with its nose on the roof of a concrete aviation fuel pump house. The engines were still running and he could smell fuel vapors. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Elmy climbed the wall of the pump house and entered the pilot’s window of the aircraft. With great effort, he was able to retard the throttles and shut off the engines, thereby preventing possible fire and explosion. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Elmy has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
