The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stephen William Carey, United States Army, for heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 9 November 1969. On this date, Lieutenant Carey was serving as the platoon leader with his mortar platoon at Phouc Hoa II. At approximately 2300 hours, the friendly compound was suddenly subjected to small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from an attacking enemy ground unit. Disregarding his personal safety, Lieutenant Carey exposed himself to the hostile fire raking the area in order to direct the firing of mortar illumination for the friendly compound. Continuing to risk his life, he maneuvered to the perimeter of the camp. After Lieutenant Carey had insured that all of the positions were secure, he personally secured a machine gun and placed devastating suppressive fire upon the aggressors. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the defense of the South Vietnamese Army compound. First Lieutenant Carey’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
