The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stephen William Carey, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Carey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 April 1970, in the Republic of Vietnam. When a fire base was under attack, he boarded an aircraft carrying emergency ammunition supplies to the base. Once on the ground, he organized his men and began establishing a re-supply landing pad. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
