The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Infantry) Joseph C. Anderson (ASN: 0-19884), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from January 1949 to August 1962.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” (Navy Award) to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Joseph C. Anderson (ASN: 0-19884), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, of a Landing Force during the planning phase and the seizure and occupation of the Japanese Islands of Saipan and Tinian from 26 April to 12 August 1944. During the planning phase, Lieutenant Colonel Anderson contributed greatly to the planning of the operation, the supervision of the provision of the necessary supplies and equipment and the supervision of the embarkation of the assault troops. During operations on Saipan and Tinian, he frequently visited areas and units where he was subjected to hostile fire in order to insure the proper delivery of supplies to the combat units. His untiring efforts, energy, resourcefulness, good judgment and constant supervision contributed immeasurably to the proper functioning of the Shore Party. By his outstanding professional knowledge, intelligence, tact, and planning ability, Lieutenant Colonel Anderson was a constant source of advice and inspiration to all with whom he was associated and contributed in a large measure to the notable success of our forces in this vital area. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Military Service. (Lieutenant Colonel Anderson is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
