The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Rodney G. Cress, United States Army, for valorous achievement on 7 March 1971, while serving with Company C, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Cress’ leadership ability, tactical knowledge and calm response under fire, helped his unit to emerge from a dangerous firefight unscathed. After an enemy ambush, he quickly positioned his squad in an effective defensive position and quickly returned fire. During the attack, Sergeant Cress single-handedly engaged and destroyed a bunker containing the enemy, which allowed the safe evacuation of the unit. Sergeant Cress’ actions directly impacted the successful outcome of the firefight. Sergeant Cress’ actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) and the United States Army.
