The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer 1 (WO-1) John W. Lowe, Jr. (ASN: W-3155072), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Warrant Officer Lowe distinguished himself by heroic actions on 26 February 1967, while attached to Company A, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. The mission of Warrant Officer Lowe’s company was to provide security for an engineer operation near the village of Phu Hoa Dong, in Binh Duong Province, Republic of Vietnam. At 0015 hours, approximately 300 Viet Cong attacked the company position and were initially beaten back. At 0100 hours, numerous Viet Cong managed to infiltrate the company defensive perimeter and attack the company command post. In the midst of a murderous mortar barrage, heavy automatic weapons and recoilless rifle fire, Warrant Officer Lowe observed that a Viet Cong had thrown a hand grenade which landed perilously close to a platoon leader. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Warrant Officer Lowe moved from his covered position and deliberately shielded the lieutenant with his own body. Despite his resultant wounds Warrant Officer Lowe armed himself and took up the defense of the company command post killing at least one Viet Cong during the action. Warrant Officer Lowe’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
