The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Gerald Wayne Putnam (AFSN: FR-30164), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Co-Pilot of a C-7A aircraft near the Special Forces Camp at Dak Seang, Republic of Vietnam, on 20 May 1970. On that date, Major Putnam was on an important re-supply mission to the besieged camp. As co-pilot, Major Putnam was responsible for coordinating with the forward air controller, fighter aircraft, and artillery sites along the route of flight as well as supervising checklist procedures. With great skill and a high degree of discipline, Major Putnam contributed significantly to mission accomplishment and the successful defense of the camp. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Putnam reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
