The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Michael Curtis Lightner (AFSN: FR-67990), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the Co-Pilot of an HH-3E Rescue Helicopter near Vung Tau, Republic of Vietnam, on 26 July 1970. On that date, Major Lightner’s exemplary knowledge and outstanding technical skill contributed significantly to the successful medical evacuation of a seriously injured Vietnamese seaman from his ship to hospital facilities ashore. Major Lightner monitored the aircraft engine, transmission, and flight instruments, guarded the throttles, and maintained essential radio communication with the other Rescue Helicopter, the Rescue Escort Aircraft, and the Rescue Control Center, thus coordinating the efforts of all participants. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Lightner reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
