The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Leonard L. Kunko (AFSN: FR-46938), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130B Navigator at Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 15 February 1971. On that date, through Major Kunko’s exceptional ability, vitally needed equipment was delivered to Khe Sanh three hours after the base was declared open. Although the short airstrip is surrounded by hazardous terrain and was not visible from the air because of adverse weather, Major Kunko, through his highly skillful use of airborne radar, accurately positioned his aircraft for a safe landing. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Kunko reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
