The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leave Cluster in addition to a previously awarded Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Seventh Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lamar Gilbert, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Phantom Weapons System Officer near Dong Hoi, North Vietnam, on 21 July 1972. On that date, Colonel Gilbert, using the Paveway I Laser Bomb Guidance System while working with a fast FAC, displayed superior skill and motivation in using the laser system to guide bombs to highly important enemy targets. Colonel Gilbert’s dedication under conditions of bad weather, intense enemy ground fire and low fuel, resulted in three anti-aircraft guns destroyed, one gun crew killed, two petroleum pumping stations destroyed, one sustained petroleum fire and an enemy tank heavily damaged. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Gilbert reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
