The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jesse T. Crowe, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 6 September 1969 while serving as a platoon sergeant with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date his element suddenly came under intense fire from an enemy battalion. Quickly realizing the brunt of the attack was centered on the right flank of another friendly force, Sergeant Crowe drove his tank into the center of the hostile fire. Firing his weapons on all sides, Sergeant Crowe led the assault on the well-fortified and concealed enemy positions. In spite of the intense enemy mortar, rocket, and automatic weapons fire which wounded his tank commander and himself, Sergeant Crowe continued into the enemy positions. Sergeant Crowe’s courage and decisive action resulted in the complete rout of the enemy forces. Staff Sergeant Crowe’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
