The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Theodore Comeau (ASN: RA-11344907), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Comeau distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 December 1966 while serving as a tank gunner in Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in a re-supply column under Viet Cong attack. While riding on the rear deck of the tank, he was completely exposed to the intense hostile fire from all sides. Initially wounded four times, Sergeant Comeau dauntlessly continued to engage the Viet Cong on both sides of the road. Alertly spotting a hostile tank-killer crew, he alternately fired his weapon and threw grenades until the insurgent team was destroyed. Only when Sergeant Comeau had expended all his ammunition, did he seek cover in the turret, where he continued to fight. His personal courage and quick action saved his tank from certain destruction and significantly helped to repel the insurgent force. Sergeant Comeau’s gallantry in action against a numerically superior hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
