The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Colonel (Armor) William W. Cobb (ASN: 0-45651), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as Commanding Officer, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in action on 29 April 1967. On this date, Colonel Company B, 1st Battalion was flying a reconnaissance mission over the Dau Tieng Plantation in his command and control helicopter when he saw several insurgents running from the hamlet of AP 14 Chanh carrying small arms and automatic weapons. He immediately directed his pilot to make a low level pass over the force to determine its size and location. Colonel Company B, 1st Battalion then ordered elements from his Regiment and from the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, which was under his operational control, to the area. As the units approached the hamlet, Colonel Company B, 1st Battalion made several more passes over the enemy position and relayed vital information to the cavalrymen. On each of these passes, he was subjected to intense hostile ground fire. He directed his men in a successful attack on the Viet Cong. Eleven Viet Cong were killed and eleven were captured during this engagement, thereby reducing the combat effectiveness of their unit, the C 64th Local Company. The success of the encounter was a direct result of Colonel Company B, 1st Battalion’s acute observations and his willingness to direct the battle under intense hostile fire. Colonel Company B, 1st Battalion’s actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
