The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Robert L. Clark, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 10 March 1970 while serving as a pilot with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Clark was piloting the command and control helicopter over the area of enemy contact when he received a request for emergency evacuation of some wounded soldiers. Realizing that no other helicopter was immediately available, Warrant Officer Clark voluntarily flew his ship in to evacuate the seriously wounded personnel. Having no air cover except his own weapons, Warrant Officer Clark, with complete disregard for his own safety, flew to the area of most intense enemy activity. Flying at tree top level, Warrant Officer Clark hastily chose a landing zone, setting down amidst a hail of enemy fire. With enemy forces only fifty meters away, Warrant Officer Clark calmly ordered his gunners to disembark and help the wounded aboard. When the wounded were aboard, Warrant Officer Clark took off under another burst of enemy fire. Warrant Officer Clark successfully outmaneuvered the enemy fire and returned the wounded men to a hospital. Warrant Officer Clark returned twice more to the scene of action, risking his life to save the life of the wounded soldiers. Warrant Officer Clark’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
