The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Ronald Lee White (ASN: 0-5330068), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant White distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 25 March 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Troop A, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division, on a mission to open Highway 547 and establish a fire support base near Hue. While setting up a night position, his element came under heavy fire. Lieutenant White immediately exposed himself to the enemy in order to organize an assault. Although wounded later in the day, Lieutenant White continued to lead his platoon for the next 20 hours, until ordered to leave the field and seek medical attention. Second Lieutenant White’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in close combat against a numerically superior hostile force are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
