The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Gary B. Holbrook, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. Private First Class Holbrook distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division near Dong Ha Mountain, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. At 1430 hours on 10 May 1970, Private Holbrook saved a radio-telephone operator from Company D, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry from drowning. The man was attempting to ford a swiftly moving stream when he lost his footing. Seeing the man thrashing and gasping, Private Holbrook stripped to his boots and trousers and plunged into the stream. Upon reaching the soldier, he summoned reserve strength to prevent the drowning man from pulling himself and another rescuer under the water. Though weakened from the exertion Private Holbrook helped drag the man to shore, where artificial respiration was successfully applied. As a result of his courage and quick thinking the life of a fellow soldier was saved. Private Holbrook’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
