The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Alphonso Peeples (ASN: RA-14833672), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Peeples distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 December 1968, while serving as a platoon sergeant with Company C, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and clear mission. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, Sergeant Peeples exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved to the forward fighting positions and pulled two of the casualties to a secure location. In the process he engaged and killed at least one enemy soldier. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Peeples then moved from position to position to direct the fire of his men and encourage them. When his unit withdrew, Sergeant Peeples exposed himself to the hostile fire as he remained behind to cover the withdrawal. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
